Syllabus CDS Exam - Latest Syllabus

CDS Exam:

Combined Defence Services Exam (CDSE) is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) twice a year for admissions into:

- Indian Military Academy (IMA)
- Indian Naval Academy (INA)
- Air Force Academy (AFA)
- Officers Training Academy (OTA)

CDS 2016 Eligibility:

Nationality

The aspirant must be a citizen of India, Nepal, Bhutan or Tibetan Refugee.

Migrated people from various countries with the intention of permanently settling in India.

CDS 2016 Age Limit:

IMA - Unmarried male born after 2nd July 1992 and earlier than 1st July 1997

INA - Unmarried male born not earlier than 2nd July 1992 and not later than 1st July 1997.

AFA - Unmarried Male age should be between 18 and 22 years as on 1st July, 2016.

OTA (SSC Course for Men) - Unmarried/Married Male born between 2nd July 1991 to 1st July 1997.

OTA (SSC Course for Women) - Unmarried/Widows/Divorcees born between 2nd July 1991 to 1st July 1997.

Women candidates are eligible for OTA (Officers Training Academy, Chennai) only.

CDS 2016 Educational Qualifications:

IMA and OTA - Aspirants must have a bachelor's degree from a government recognised University.

Indian Naval Academy - Aspirant must have a degree in Engineering from a recognized University.

Air Force Academy - Candidate needs to have a bachelor's degree from a recognized University with Physics and Chemistry in 10+2 or B. Tech.

Candidates who are appearing the final year, they can also apply.

CDS 2016 Physical Standards:

Aspirants should be physically and mentally fit as per the physical standards for admission to the Combined Defence Services Examination.

CDS Exam Schedule:

This year, CDSE (1) got conducted in the month of February and CDSE (2) in October.

For the tentative schedule of CDSE 2017, refer to the table on the right.

CDS 2016 Exam Scheme and Syllabus:

CDSE is conducted in two parts. One is the written examination and second phase is interview.

The final selection of aspirants applying for CDS is done on basis of their performance in personal interview.

CDS Exam English Syllabus:

The paper was a mix of easy and difficult.

Questions from Comprehension and Sentence Arrangement were easy and the ones from Antonyms-Synonyms were difficult.

An average attempt of 70 questions is expected by the candidates this year.

CDS Exam Mathematics Syllabus:

This year the questions from Maths were quite lengthy and a mix of different topics.

Aspirants with good speed and accuracy can easily score well.

60% of the questions were from Trigonometry, Arithmetic Ability and Geometry.

Candidates with an average attempt of 55-60 questions can get a decent score.

A good chance to score high marks for the candidates applying for AFA and IMA.

CDS Exam General Knowledge Syllabus:

Most of the students found this section tough.

Questions from History, Polity and Geography were quite difficult.

The questions from Current Affairs were easier and scoring.

CDS 2016 Exam Pattern:

Highlights of CDS 2016 Exam Pattern:

The Military, Naval and Air Force Academy aspirants are tested in English, General Knowledge (GK) and Elementary Mathematics.

Each paper is of 2 hours consisting of 100 marks.

Aspirants for the OTA are evaluated similarly except for being exempted from taking Elementary Mathematics test.

Questions from Elementary Mathematics are set from Matriculation level.

Rest of the questions are based on Graduation standard.

For every wrong answer marked by the candidate, one-third of the mark is deducted.

The question papers will be available in both English and Hindi.

CDS Exam Cutoff:

CDS II 2016 will be conducted by UPSC on October 23.

Candidates are required to secure minimum required marks in the multiple-choice exam to qualify for SSB interview.

SSB interview is the final round of admission process for defence service courses.
