Olympics

• The ancient Olympic Games were primarily a part of a religious festival in honor of Zeus, the father of the Greek gods and goddesses.
• The festival and the games were held in Olympia, a rural sanctuary site in the western Peloponnesos.
• They were stopped by a royal order of the Roman Emperor Theodosius in AD 394.
• The modern Olympic Games were started in Athens the capital of Greece on 6th April, 1896. with great efforts made by French nobleman, Baron Pierre de Coubertin.
• Separate Winter Olympic Games began during 1924.
• Women have been participating in the Olympics since 1912.
• The Olympic Games are organised after every four years.

• It was at the Amsterdam Games in 1928 that for the first time an Olympic flame was ceremonially lighted and burned in a giant torch at the entrance of the stadium. The modern version of the flame was adopted in 1936 at the Berlin Games.

Commonwealth Games

• The first Commonwealth Games were held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada where 11 countries sent 400 athletes to take part in 6 sports and 59 events.
• Since 1930, the games have been conducted every four years except for 1942 and 1946.
•The Commonwealth Games Federation (CG F) is the organisation which is responsible for the direction and control of the Commonwealth Games.
• There are currently 53 'members of the Commonwealth of Nations and 71 team participated i.n the games.
• The 2010 Commonwealth Games were held in New Delhi, India.
• 20th Commonwealth Games of 2014 were held in Glasgow (Scotland-UK).
• 21st Commonwealth Games of 2018 will be held in Gold Coast of Australia and 22nd will be held in Durban, South Africa.

Asian Games

• The Asian Games, also called the Asiad, are a multi-sport event held every four years among athletes from all over Asia.
• It is the biggest multi-sport games after the Olympic Games, the Asian Games is the most prestigious event organised by the Olympic Council of Asia.
• Similar to the Olympic Games, the Asian Games are held every four years, with the 17th edition to be held in Incheon in 2014.
• The games are regulated by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), under the supervision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
• The first Asian Games were held in 1951 in New Delhi (India). The 2010 Asian Games were held in Guangzhou, China.
• 2014 Asian Games were held in lncheon. South Korea.
• 2018 Asian Games will be held in Jakarta (Indonesia).

South Asian Federation (SAF) Games

• Like the Commonwealth Games, the South Asian Federation (SAF) Games are a biennial multi-sport event held among the athletes from South Asia.
• The governing body of these games is South Asian Sports Council (SASC), formed in 1983.
• At present, SAG are joined by eight members namely Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka.is a sports festival of South Asian countries.
• The South Asian Sports Federation was formed in New Delhi on 26th November, 1982.
• The first South Asian Federation Games were held at Kathmandu (Nepal) in 1984.
• The 2010 SAF Games were held in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The 2016, SAF Games will be held in, Hambantota (Sri Lanka)
• The eight participating countries are India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan and Maldives. The games form a part of the SAARC programme.
• The motto of the SAF Games is Peace, Prosperity and Progress.
• No SAF Game were staged in 1986 as it was the year of commonwealth and Asian Games.

Cricket World Cup

• The first Cricket World Cup was organised in England in 1975., the first ODI cricket match having been played only four years prior.
• Each of the first three World Cups were held in England.
• From the 1987 tournament onwards, hosting has been shared between countries under an unofficial rotation system, with fourteen ICC members having hosted at least one match in the tournament.
• In the late 1970s, Kerry Packer established the rival World Series Cricket (WSC) competition.A separate women's Cricket World Cup has been held every four years since 1973.
