Reflection, Transmission and Refraction of Waves :
When a wave reflects from a denser medium, it undergoes a phase change of `pi`. (figure)
Whereas, when the wave reflects from a free-end, as shown in fig, no such change takes place (figure).
If a wave enters a region where the wave velocity is smaller, the reflected wave inverted. If it enters a region where the wave velocity is larger, the reflected wave is not inverted. If the transmitted wave is never inverted.
Consider the cases shown below. the thicker rope is a medium in which the wave velocity is smaller .
