Physics ALTERNATING CURRENT

Resonance in an RLC Series Circuit

If the impedance of series RLC circuit become minimum ie reactance of the circuit is 'zero', the LCR combination behaves like a pure resistive circuit and the current is in phase with the voltage. The condition for this to occur is

`X_C -X_L = 0 => 1/(omega C) = omega L`
` => omega = 1/sqrt(LC)`

`f_0 =1/(2 pi sqrt(LC))` is called the 'resonant' or 'natural resonance'

frequency for the given circuit as it represents the frequency at which the peak current `i_0` has a maximum value. This can be further illustrated from the graph alongside which represents the variation of current with the frequency of the voltage source `f`.

1) At resonance current will be maximum ie impedance will be minimum and equal to Resistance.
2) Power factor of circuit maximum = 1
3) Series RLC circuit is also used as voltage amplifier, also as tuner circuit etc
