Chemistry IONIC BONDING:FORMATION OF IONIC BOND,FACTORS AFFECTING THE FORMATION OF IONIC BONDS

Formation of Ionic Bond :

The formation of an ionic compound is favoured by:

(i) Low ionization energy (`IE`) of the metal.

(ii) high electron affinity (`EA`) of the other element.

(iii) higher lattice energy (`U`) of the resulting compound.

Factors Affecting the Formation of Ionic Bond :

The formation of an ionic compound is obviously related to the ease of formation of the cations and anions from the neutral atom which depends on two main factors:

`text(Ionization energy)` :
Lower the value of ionization energy of an atom, greater will be the ease of formation of the cation from it.

`text(Electron affinity)` :
Higher the electron affinity of an atom, greater the ease of formation of the anion from it.

Properties of Ionic Compounds :

(i) Ionic compounds cannot show electrical conductivity as solids but conduct electricity quite well when molten.

(ii) Ionic compounds tend to have high melting points.

(iii) Ionic compounds usually are very hard but brittle substances.

(iv) Ionic compounds are often soluble in polar solvents with high dielectric constants.
