Chemistry OZONOLYSIS AND POLYMERIZATION

Ozonolysis Reaction :

All alkenes react with Ozone to form an Ozonide. See fig.1.

Such Ozonides may be cleaved in 3-ways : See fig.2.

(i) `text(Ozonolysis of Propene)` See fig.3.

(ii) `text(Ozonolysis of 2-Methyl but-2-ene)` See fig.4.

Ozonolysis reactions help to locate the terminal position of double bond in alkene by estimation of `CO_2` formed by oxidation of terminal alkene.

Polymerization :

`nCH_2 = CH_2 underset(O_2)overset(Delta//text(Pressure))-> -(CH_2-CH_2)-` polythene

`nCH_2 = CH -Cl overset[text(Traces of) O_2]-> undersettext[polyvinylchloride (PVC)][-(CH_2-CHCl)_n-]`

`nCF_2 = CF_2 underset(Delta)-> undersettext[polytetra fluoro ethylene (PTFE)][-(F_2C-CF_2)_n-]`
